- I read the whole Bible from Genesis through Revelation, four times back-to back in 2010.
- Then I lead an in depth study of the whole Bible Beginning December 1, 2010 and ending in February 2013.
My method for reading the Bible four times:
I listened to audio CD’s of the text as I read along. The audio created the pace of my reading, and often I did more listening than reading. Each time through the Bible I read/listened to a different version – NKJV, NRSV, ESV, and WEB.
Our method for studying:
Each Saturday morning and Wednesday evening, I showed the scripture text on a big screen TV, and we listen to an audio podcast of the readings. We stopped whenever anyone in our group had a comment or question, at the end of every saga, and at the end of every book, for open discussion. Sessions ranged from 2 to 5 hours per.
We used scholarly reviews after major sections, at the end of each book, and sometimes video clips (where we could find scholarly sources) to explain what else was going on in the world during the times the Bible described.
I insisted that we not project any doctrine into what we read, and studied based on knowledge we gained from earlier studies in our series – not projecting forward to other sections of the Bible.

We used the World English version of the Bible because it, unlike most others, presents the name of God — YHWH — where it is originally written. The name of God was replaced in the Bible by the words “the LORD” in the vast majority of the places where it was originally written. However, the World English Bible uses the name Yahweh which is not the most accurate rendering of the name. The best scholarship renders the name Yehowah (pronounced Yehovah or Jehovah).
